Luke 7.1-10 What Causes Jesus to Marvel?

Summary: We build our lives either on the sand or on the firm foundation, hearing God’s word, and acting on it. We pray, give us ears to hear and eyes to see, and speak to us by the Holy Spirit. We will see in this text that faith honors God’s word and authority. When we fail to take God at His word, we dishonor God’s word and His authority.

1. A. Read Luke 7:1-10. What stands out to you?

B. What did Jesus find in the centurion that caused Him to marvel ? What else caused Jesus to marvel? (The verb “thaumadzo” means to marvel or wonder at something. It is sprinkled all over the New Testament, but Jesus is the subject of this verb only in these two locations.) Luke 7:9, Mark 6:6

C. We may throw words around casually, but not Jesus, nor the Bible. How does Luke (and the rest of the New Testament) use this word? At what do you marvel? Look at the end of the Bible and be sobered by what causes men to marvel. Luke 1:21, 1:63, 2:18, 2:33, 4:22, 8:25, 9:43, 11:14, John 7:15, Acts 4:13, Revelation 13:3

Please note: our lives, lived in the power of the Holy Spirit, can produce the same “marveling” that Christ’s life produced. This is because “it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Did you not marvel at John Corey’s last breath, praising His Savior?

2. A. Look back Luke 7:9 and Mark 6:6. At what did Jesus marvel?

B. Ultimately, what are the only two reactions man has to God’s word? I Corinthians 1:18

C. Jesus looks at faith, or the lack thereof, and marvels. This should cause us to want to learn everything we can about faith. Romans 1:17, II Corinthians 5:7, Galatians 2:20, Hebrews 11:6

3. A. Look back at this account in Luke 7. What do you observe about this centurion? How are centurions portrayed in the New Testament? Luke 7:1-5, Matthew 27:54, Acts 10:22, 27:42-43

B. Of what is the centurion’s faith born? In what was the centurion’s faith? With what does saving faith start? Luke 7:6-8, 5:8, 18:10-13, Isaiah 6:5, Job 42:6, I Peter 5:5, Psalm 34:18, Romans 10:17, Hebrews 11:1-3, Psalm 33:6, Genesis 1:3

C. What was the result of taking Jesus at His word? Luke 7:10

(Note: When faith grows, humility grows, e.g., Paul’s progression of faith and humility: I Corinthians 15:9, Ephesians 3:8, I Timothy 1:15)

4. Take note of what caused Jesus to marvel in question 1B. How important is faith? Luke 7:10, Mark 6:6, Hebrews 11:1, 6, Romans 10:11, II Corinthians 5:7
