Luke 1:57-72 Zacharias’ Praise Song, Part 1

Summary: Elizabeth burst forth in praise; Mary burst forth in praise; now Zacharias bursts forth in praise. Each was filled with the Holy Spirit, and when we are controlled by God’s Holy Spirit we will praise the Lord. “Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord.”

1. A. The scripture is absorbing. If you do not feel like praising the Lord, try just reading His Holy Word. Psalm 106:1-10

B. The name Zacharias means “The Lord Remembers.” We forget and then remember things all the time. What does it mean when the Lord “remembers?” Luke 1:13, 57, 67-79

2. A. Recall the scene: Mary had traveled to see Elizabeth. The two expectant mothers burst into joy and praise and Mary stayed for about three months and then returned home. Luke 1:36, 39, 56 What does John’s birth trigger? Luke 1:57-58, 17

B. Did you note the phase, “the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her?” What is mercy to you? Ephesians 2:1-7, I Peter 1:3

C. Are you in a situation where you need mercy? You know that we are all in a situation needing mercy! What should we do? Matthew 15:22, Mark 10:47, Luke 17:12-13, 10:30-37

3. A. What happens when Zacharias testifies to what he remembers the Lord had told him? Luke 1:59-63

B. How would you characterize Zacharias’ last spoken words and his first written/spoken words, separated by nine months of silence? Luke 1:18, 1:63-64

C. What was the short-term effect of Zacharias’ words? Luke 1:65-66

4. A. We praise God for who He is and what He has done. What about Zacharias? Luke 1:67-79

B. Read the text again. What observations can you make? 1) What is the source of all real praise? Luke 1:67, 15, 35, 41, 2:25-32, 3:16, 22, 4:1, 16-19, John 14:18, 15:5, Galatians 5:22-23 2) Who is God to Zacharias? What were the first words out of his mouth after being filled with the Holy Spirit? Luke 1:68, I Chronicles 29:10, 18 3) What has God done to cause Zacharias’ praise? Luke 1:68, 78, John 1:14, I Samuel 2:21, Jeremiah 29:10-13 4) What is Spirit-filled praise? Who or what does it focus on? Ephesians 5:18-19, Psalm 106:1-2, 6-8, 44-46 5) What is not Spirit filled praise? Psalm 106:13-14, 16, 19-21, 28, 32-43

C. Where do you want to be? Psalm 106:45-48
